A lion that talks. And in a fairly refined British sort of accent.
Butler seems to have gained an enormous sense of manners and proprietary along with the ability to talk, hence the name. As a lion, however, he has an equally large sense of his own dignity. He's a proud beast, though something of a lazy, pleasure-seeking one. He has no particular objection to where his food comes from, but he won't beg for it. That rather sums up his whole view on life. He doesn't care what a thing is, or where it comes from, but he does care to what lengths he has to go to get it. If something is too much trouble, or if he has to reduce himself too much, he forgets about it.
He has the same attitude towards people. He bows to no-one, not even Dapper. Butler chooses to follow Dapper out of friendship and loyalty, not simply because the man leads the Blades. However, he is quite aware that he is unlikely to be accepted anywhere else, which is why he stays with them. He feels no particular need to prove himself to anyone. He knows who and what he is, and is proud of it. He is a sociable animal, and has never exhibited any real hatred or anger towards anyone. But anyone who tries to harm Butler's friends will regret it.
He is Butler, not King of the Jungle, but a King unto himself.
Like several others among the Blades, Butler owes his life and freedom to Dapper, Rippingale, Reevin and Tricherion. They rescued him from the cruel demon-sorceror Varrenkalis. Butler has never spoken of what happened to him at the hands of the evil mage, or how he came to be captured, and no-one has dared to ask. It is possible that he gained the ability to talk as a result of the experiments, but for some reason the other Blades don't think that likely. Perhaps because Butler himself seems to subtly discourage the idea.
